Italy is one of those countries that stays in your heart long after your trip ends. I used to study in Italy, and during that time, I had the chance to visit many places in this stunning country. From ancient ruins and romantic cities to lakes, mountains, islands, and colorful coastal towns, Italy has so much variety that one trip never feels enough.
Before making this list, I researched a lot and combined my own travel experience with the places I still dream of visiting. Some destinations here are places I have already been to and loved, while others are still on my bucket list for the near future. This is my personal list of the 20 best Italian destinations to travel, especially if you are planning your first or second trip to Italy.

Venice
Venice is one of the most unique cities in the world. Instead of cars and roads, you have canals, bridges, gondolas, and narrow alleys. It is romantic, mysterious, and beautiful, especially early in the morning or late in the evening when the streets become quieter.
The most famous sights include St. Mark’s Basilica, Doge’s Palace, Rialto Bridge, the Grand Canal, and the Bridge of Sighs. A vaporetto ride along the Grand Canal is one of the best ways to see the city from the water. You can also visit nearby islands such as Murano, known for glassmaking, and Burano, famous for its colorful houses.
Venice can be very crowded during the day, especially around St. Mark’s Square and Rialto. My best tip is to stay overnight if possible, instead of only visiting on a day trip. After many day visitors leave, Venice becomes much more peaceful and magical.

Some of the most beautiful places to visit around Lake Garda include Sirmione, Malcesine, Riva del Garda, Limone sul Garda, and Bardolino. Sirmione is famous for its castle and thermal waters, while Malcesine has beautiful lake views and a cable car up Monte Baldo. Taking the ferry between the towns is part of the experience, because the lake views are stunning from the water.
Lake Como can be visited as a day trip from Milan, but staying overnight is much better if your budget allows. The historic center of Genoa is one of the largest in Europe, with maze-like alleys called caruggi. Florence

The heart of Siena is Piazza del Campo, a unique shell-shaped square where the famous Palio horse race takes place. Siena Cathedral is another must-see, with its striking black-and-white marble design and richly decorated interior. The whole historic center is perfect for slow walking and getting lost.
Siena can be visited as a day trip from Florence, but staying overnight gives you a better feeling for the city. In the evening, when many day visitors leave, Siena becomes quieter and more romantic. It is also a good base for exploring the Tuscan countryside.
Tuscany & Perugia

Vatican City
Although Vatican City is technically not part of Italy, it is an essential destination when you visit Rome. It is the smallest independent state in the world and one of the most important religious and cultural places in Europe. For many travelers, visiting the Vatican is one of the highlights of a trip to Italy.
The main places to visit are St. Peter’s Basilica, St. Peter’s Square, the Vatican Museums, and the Sistine Chapel. The Vatican Museums are huge, so it is better to book tickets in advance and plan enough time for the visit. The Sistine Chapel is especially famous for Michelangelo’s ceiling, and it is one of those places that feels even more impressive in real life.
Even if you are not religious, Vatican City is worth visiting for its art, architecture, and history. St. Peter’s Basilica is free to enter, but the security line can be long. If you want a beautiful view of Rome, you can also climb to the dome of the basilica.
Pompeii
Pompeii is one of the most fascinating archaeological sites in Italy. The ancient Roman city was buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, which preserved streets, houses, frescoes, baths, shops, and public spaces. Visiting Pompeii gives you a powerful feeling of what daily life was like in ancient Rome.
The site is much larger than many people expect. You can easily spend half a day walking through the ruins, and even then you will not see everything. Comfortable shoes, water, and sun protection are very important, especially if you visit in summer.
Pompeii is easy to visit from Naples or Sorrento, and it can also be combined with Mount Vesuvius. If you are interested in history, this is a must-see destination. It is not just a ruin; it is one of the most vivid windows into the ancient world.
Amalfi Coast
The Amalfi Coast is one of the most breathtaking coastal destinations in Italy. It is famous for dramatic cliffs, colorful villages, lemon trees, turquoise water, and winding roads along the sea. Everything looks like a postcard, especially when you see the coast from a boat.
The most famous towns are Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello. Positano is the most iconic, with pastel houses built into the cliffside. Amalfi has a historic center and a beautiful cathedral, while Ravello is quieter and known for its gardens and panoramic views.
The Amalfi Coast is beautiful, but it can also be crowded and expensive, especially in July and August. If possible, visit in May, early June, September, or early October for a better experience. Ferries are often more scenic and more relaxing than buses when traveling between coastal towns.
Puglia
Puglia is located in the heel of Italy’s boot and has become one of the most loved regions in southern Italy. It is known for whitewashed towns, olive groves, beautiful beaches, baroque architecture, and a slower pace of life. Puglia feels relaxed, sunny, and full of character.

Capri can be visited as a day trip from Naples, Sorrento, or the Amalfi Coast. However, if you stay overnight, you can enjoy the island after the day-trippers leave. For a quieter and slightly more relaxed atmosphere, Anacapri is a lovely area to consider.
Sicily
Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean and one of the most diverse destinations in Italy. It has ancient ruins, baroque towns, beaches, volcanoes, street food, and a strong local culture. Sicily feels very different from northern and central Italy, which makes it especially exciting to explore.
Some of the best places to visit in Sicily include Palermo, Catania, Taormina, Mount Etna, Syracuse, Noto, Ragusa, Cefalù, and the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento. Palermo is lively and full of street food, while Taormina is elegant and scenic. Mount Etna adds a dramatic volcanic landscape that makes Sicily even more unique.
Sicily is not a destination to rush because the island is large and travel times can be long. For a short trip, it is better to focus on one side of the island. If you want to explore more deeply, plan at least 7 to 10 days.
Sardinia
Sardinia is one of the best beach destinations in Italy. It is famous for crystal-clear water, white sand, wild coastlines, and beautiful islands. If your dream Italy trip includes swimming, boat trips, and beach days, Sardinia should be high on your list.
Some of the most beautiful places include Costa Smeralda, La Maddalena, Cala Gonone, Stintino, Villasimius, and the Gulf of Orosei. Boat tours are one of the best ways to enjoy the island, especially around La Maddalena and Cala Gonone. The beaches often look tropical, but with a unique Mediterranean atmosphere.
Sardinia is best explored by car because many beaches and towns are spread out. July and August are the busiest and most expensive months. For better prices and fewer crowds, June and September are excellent times to visit.
Tips for Italian Travel
Outfit by Season
Italy has different climates depending on the region, so your packing list should match both the season and your itinerary. Spring and autumn are usually the most comfortable seasons for city travel. You can wear light layers, comfortable shoes, and a jacket for cooler mornings and evenings.
Summer can be very hot, especially in Rome, Florence, Naples, Sicily, Sardinia, and Puglia. Light clothes, sunglasses, sunscreen, and breathable fabrics are very useful. If you plan to visit churches, remember to bring something to cover your shoulders and knees.
Winter is colder in northern Italy, especially in Milan, Turin, Venice, Lake Como, and the Dolomites. You will need a warm coat, scarf, and comfortable shoes. Southern Italy is usually milder, but it can still be rainy or windy, so checking the forecast before packing is always a good idea.
Shopping Seasons
Italy is a great country for shopping, especially if you love fashion, leather goods, shoes, bags, cosmetics, and home items. The biggest sale seasons usually happen in winter and summer. Winter sales often start in early January, while summer sales usually begin in July, though exact dates can vary by region.
Milan is the best city for luxury fashion and designer shopping. Florence is famous for leather goods, while Rome has a good mix of high-street brands, luxury boutiques, and independent shops. If you love outlet shopping, you can also look for designer outlets near Milan, Florence, and Rome.
If you are a non-EU visitor, you may be able to use tax-free shopping when you meet the minimum purchase amount. Keep your receipts and allow extra time at the airport for the refund process. It can take longer during busy travel seasons.
Payment
Card payments are widely accepted in Italy, especially in hotels, restaurants, shops, train stations, and tourist attractions. However, it is still useful to carry some cash for small cafés, markets, local buses, public toilets, or small family-run businesses. In smaller towns, cash can still be more convenient.
Use official bank ATMs when possible, because independent ATMs may charge higher fees. It is also smart to check your bank’s foreign transaction fees before traveling. A travel card or multi-currency card can be helpful if you are visiting for more than a few days.
Tipping is not as expected in Italy as it is in some other countries. Some restaurants charge a coperto, which is a cover charge, and service may already be included. If the service is good, rounding up the bill or leaving a few euros is appreciated, but it is usually not required.

For countryside areas, islands, lakes, and mountain regions, renting a car or combining trains, buses, and ferries can be more practical. That is why it is important to plan your route carefully instead of trying to fit too many places into one trip.
Trains are one of the easiest ways to travel around Italy. High-speed trains connect many major cities, including Rome, Florence, Bologna, Milan, Venice, and Naples. This makes it easy to plan a classic Italy itinerary without renting a car.
Regional trains are useful for shorter routes, such as Florence to Pisa, Milan to Lake Como, Venice to Verona, or Naples to Pompeii. They are usually cheaper than high-speed trains but slower. For regional tickets, always check whether your ticket needs validation before boarding, especially if you buy a paper ticket at the station.
For places like Tuscany, Puglia, Sicily, Sardinia, the Dolomites, and some lake areas, renting a car can make your trip much easier. Public transport exists, but it may not always reach small towns, beaches, viewpoints, or countryside stays. My advice is to use trains between big cities and rent a car only for the regions where you really need it.
Hotel and B&B
Italy has many types of accommodation, including hotels, B&Bs, guesthouses, apartments, boutique stays, and countryside agriturismi. In big cities, location is very important because staying central can save time and transport costs. A slightly more expensive hotel in a good area can sometimes be worth it.
For destinations like Lake Como, Amalfi Coast, Capri, Sardinia, and the Dolomites, accommodation can become expensive in high season. Booking early is important if you travel in summer or during holidays. Shoulder season, especially April, May, September, and October, can offer better prices and a more pleasant experience.
In many Italian cities, accommodation providers may collect a local tourist tax, usually charged per person per night. This tax depends on the municipality and type of accommodation, so the amount can vary from one city to another. It is a good idea to check this before arrival, especially if you are paying part of your stay in cash.
Road Trip
A road trip in Italy can be amazing, especially if you want to explore countryside regions, mountain areas, islands, or small coastal towns. Tuscany, Puglia, Sicily, Sardinia, the Dolomites, and Lake Garda are all great road trip destinations. A car gives you more freedom to stop at viewpoints, villages, beaches, and restaurants along the way.
However, driving in Italian cities can be stressful. Many historic centers have restricted traffic zones called ZTL zones, and entering them without permission can lead to fines. Parking can also be difficult and expensive in cities like Florence, Rome, Milan, Naples, and Venice.
For this reason, I would not rent a car for the entire trip unless your itinerary is focused on countryside or islands. A better plan is to travel by train between major cities, then rent a car for specific parts of the trip. For example, you can visit Florence by train, then rent a car for Tuscany, or fly to Bari and rent a car for Puglia.
Italy is a country you can visit many times and still find something new. You can plan a classic trip through Rome, Florence, Venice, and Milan, or you can focus on lakes, islands, mountains, coastal towns, and countryside regions. Each destination has its own personality, and that is what makes Italy so special.
For a first trip, I recommend choosing only a few destinations instead of trying to see everything at once. Italy is best enjoyed slowly, with time for long meals, evening walks, local markets, and spontaneous discoveries. Whether you love history, food, art, beaches, mountains, or road trips, Italy is always a good idea.
