I visited Plitvice Lakes National Park last autumn, and the scenery was honestly one of the most breathtaking things I have ever seen in Croatia. Even after seeing countless photos online before the trip, nothing prepared me for the real experience of walking among turquoise lakes, wooden pathways, and endless waterfalls surrounded by colorful autumn forests.

If you are staying in Zagreb, visiting Plitvice as a day trip is completely possible. However, there are several important things I wish I had known before going, especially about the buses and the two different entrances to the park.

Why Visit Plitvice Lakes National Park?

I first heard about Plitvice Lakes National Park from a friend during my college years. She told me, “If possible, I’ll definitely visit Croatia and Plitvice Lakes one more time. The nature there is just breathtaking.” That immediately made me curious, so I searched for photos of the park online.

But it actually took me six years after that conversation before I could finally make the trip happen. And after visiting it myself, I completely understood what my friend meant. If I ever have the chance again, I would absolutely return to Plitvice one more time.

Plitvice Lakes National Park is one of the most beautiful natural destinations in Europe and easily one of the highlights of Croatia. The park is famous for its chain of bright turquoise lakes connected by countless waterfalls, wooden pathways, and forest trails. Some waterfalls gently flow through the trees, while others crash dramatically down the cliffs into crystal-clear water below.

What makes Plitvice feel so special is how immersive the experience is. Instead of simply looking at the scenery from far away, you walk directly above the lakes on wooden boardwalks, pass beside waterfalls, and constantly hear the sound of flowing water around you.

The colors in the park almost look unreal, especially on sunny days when the lakes turn vivid shades of emerald and turquoise. During autumn, the orange and yellow forests surrounding the lakes make the scenery even more breathtaking.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Plitvice Lakes National Park?

I visited Plitvice in autumn, and personally I think it was the perfect season. The combination of orange and yellow forests, turquoise lakes, and waterfalls created some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen. Autumn also felt much more peaceful compared to the crowded summer months.

Each season in Plitvice has its own atmosphere. During spring, the waterfalls are usually the strongest because of melting snow and rain, so the park feels very lively and full of energy. The forests become green again, and the weather is cool and comfortable for hiking.

Summer is the most popular season because the days are long and the weather is warm. However, it is also the busiest time of year. The wooden pathways can become very crowded, especially during midday and around the famous viewpoints near Entrance 1.

Autumn is ideal if you want fewer crowds and beautiful colors. The cooler weather also makes long walks much more enjoyable. For photography, autumn mornings are especially magical because of the soft light and mist around the lakes.

Winter is the quietest and most unique season. Snow and frozen waterfalls can make the park look like a fairytale. However, some trails and boardwalks may close depending on weather conditions.

No matter which season you choose, I highly recommend arriving early in the morning. The park feels much calmer before the tour buses arrive, and the lighting is much better for photography.

How to Get from Zagreb to Plitvice Lakes

The train system in Croatia isn’t fully developed, so the easiest way to visit Plitvice from Zagreb is by bus. There are local Croatian buses departing from Zagreb Central Bus Station (you can check the schedule at buscroatia.com), as well as buses operated by FlixBus.

One important thing to know is that the drop-off locations are slightly different. FlixBus and local buses can stop at either Entrance 1 or Entrance 2 , just remember that you’ll reach Entrance 1 first, then Entrance 2.

Personally, I strongly recommend starting your visit at Entrance 1 because the most famous viewpoints and waterfalls are located there.

Important Warning About Zagreb Bus Station

I nearly missed my bus at the central bus station in Zagreb because many buses looked extremely similar. Several buses did not even have a clear route sign displayed at the front, which made it surprisingly confusing to find the correct one.

The station was also much larger and busier than I expected. Because of this, I highly recommend arriving early and asking around if you are unsure which bus is yours. It is much less stressful to have extra time rather than running through the station at the last minute.

Entrance 1 vs Entrance 2 at Plitvice Lakes

The park has two main entrances, Entrance 1 and Entrance 2, and this detail matters much more than I expected.

When I visited, I accidentally started my trip from Entrance 2 because I did not know the difference between the two entrances. For hours, I kept wondering where the iconic multi-layer waterfall viewpoint was — the breathtaking scene that appears in almost every photo of Plitvice online.

Only near the end of my hike did I finally reach the famous panoramic viewpoint near Entrance 1. By then, I was already tired and rushing to make it back in time for my bus.

If I could redo the trip, I would absolutely start at Entrance 1 and finish at Entrance 2. This route makes the experience much smoother and allows you to enjoy the most spectacular viewpoints while you still have energy for exploring and photography. You should save the location of Entrance 1 or Entrance 2 on Google Maps and track the route to drop off right at Entrance 1.

Visiting by Car

If you come by car instead of bus, you should know that the two entrances are separated, so you may need to make a loop around the national park depending on where you park and where you finish your hike.

Parking areas and ticket offices are available at both entrances.

Top Viewpoints & Photo Spots

The most beautiful viewpoint in the park is definitely the famous panoramic platform near Entrance 1. From there, you can see multiple layers of waterfalls flowing into bright turquoise lakes below. This is the classic Plitvice view that appears in postcards and travel photos.

Another highlight is Veliki Slap, the tallest waterfall in Croatia. Seeing it from both above and below gives completely different perspectives, and the sound of the waterfall becomes more powerful the closer you get.

I also loved the wooden boardwalks crossing directly above the lakes. The water is so clear that you can see fish swimming beneath your feet, and in autumn the surrounding colors make every corner of the park photogenic.

Best Hiking Route & Activities

For first time visitors, my suggested hiking route is to start from Entrance 1 and follow the trail across the lakes until you reach the Great Waterfall, Veliki Slap. After visiting the waterfall, continue along the trail toward Ticket Office 2. From there, take the ferry across the lake, then continue on a short hiking trail to see Galovački Buk, Mali Prštavac, and Veliki Prštavac, which are some of the most beautiful waterfalls in the park. Click here to see it on Google Map. This route allows you to experience the park’s most dramatic scenery first before continuing into the quieter lake areas.

The ferry ride near Entrance 2 is included with the park ticket and provides a relaxing break during the hike. The views from the lake are especially beautiful during autumn when the forests are colorful.

Photography is also one of the best activities in the park. Early morning is usually the best time to visit because the lighting is softer and there are fewer crowds on the wooden pathways.

How Much Time Do You Need?

You should plan to spend at least three hours inside the park, plus another four to five hours for the round-trip bus journey from Zagreb.

Personally, I think five to six hours inside the park is much better if you want to fully enjoy the scenery without feeling rushed. Starting early in the morning makes the entire trip much more enjoyable.

Should You Stay Overnight?

If possible, I highly recommend staying near Plitvice Lakes National Park instead of visiting only as a day trip from Zagreb.

Staying nearby gives you much more time to explore the park at a slower pace, and you can also visit early in the morning before the crowds arrive. The atmosphere in the morning feels especially peaceful and magical.

Plitvice Lakes National Park was one of the most beautiful natural places I visited in Croatia. The waterfalls, turquoise lakes, wooden pathways, and autumn scenery felt almost unreal. Even though I made mistakes with the entrance and bus planning, the experience was still unforgettable. If I could give only one important tip, it would be this: start at Entrance 1. That is where the most iconic and breathtaking views are waiting for you. Get go!
