Top 10 Destinations to Visit in Germany
Explore the top 10 destinations to visit in Germany, from Berlin and Cologne to fairytale castles, cherry blossoms in Bonn, Rothenburg, Munich, Neuschwanstein, Königssee and Obersee.

I have visited Germany five times in the last eight years, and honestly, my feelings about the country have changed a lot over time. At first, I thought Germany might not have that much to offer for a trip compared to places like Italy, France, or Switzerland. But after several visits, I slowly realized that Germany is full of beautiful castles, fairytale towns, dramatic lakes, historic cities, river valleys, and very underrated nature spots.

My first Germany trip was a solo trip to Munich and Neuschwanstein Castle in 2018. Then I visited Cologne in 2019, Frankfurt in 2020, and took a longer summer trip in 2022 to Stuttgart, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Munich, Neuschwanstein Castle again, Königssee, and Obersee. Most recently, I did a spring trip to Cochem Castle, Eltz Castle, and Bonn during cherry blossom season.
So here is my personal list of the top 10 destinations to visit in Germany, arranged roughly from north to south. Some places I have visited myself, and some are still on my Germany wishlist.
1. Berlin
Berlin is probably the most important city to visit if you want to understand Germany’s modern history. It is not the prettiest city in the classic fairytale sense, but it is full of stories, museums, memorials, street art, food, nightlife, and creative energy.

Some of the most famous places to visit include the Brandenburg Gate, Berlin Wall Memorial, East Side Gallery, Reichstag, Museum Island, and Checkpoint Charlie. If Munich feels traditional and polished, Berlin feels raw, open, and constantly changing.

2. The Devil’s Bridge, Rakotzbrücke
The Devil’s Bridge, or Rakotzbrücke, is one of the most photogenic places in Germany and is located in Kromlau, near the Polish border. The bridge is famous because, when reflected in the water, it creates a perfect circle.

This place is high on my wishlist because it looks almost unreal in photos. It is not a big-city destination, so it is best combined with a road trip through eastern Germany or a visit to Dresden and Saxony.
3. Dresden and Castles Nearby
Dresden is one of Germany’s most beautiful historic cities, especially if you love architecture, palaces, and riverside views. The old town has grand landmarks such as the Frauenkirche, Zwinger Palace, Semper Opera House, and Brühl’s Terrace.

What makes Dresden even more attractive is that there are many beautiful places nearby, including castles such as Albrechtsburg Castle and Moritzburg Castle, and the dramatic landscapes of Saxon Switzerland National Park. If you enjoy a mix of city sightseeing and nature, Dresden is a very strong destination to add to a Germany itinerary.

4. Cologne
Cologne was one of the first German cities I visited, and its cathedral is truly unforgettable. Cologne Cathedral is huge, dark, detailed, and powerful — the kind of landmark that makes you stop for a moment when you first see it.

Besides the cathedral, Cologne is also a lively city with a beautiful riverside, colorful old town houses, museums, Christmas markets in winter, and a very friendly atmosphere. It is a great choice for a short city break in western Germany.

5. Bonn During Cherry Blossom Season
Bonn is especially famous in spring, when its cherry blossom streets turn pink. The most popular spots are around Heerstraße and Breite Straße, where the trees form a beautiful pink tunnel.

I visited Bonn during cherry blossom season, and I think this is one of the prettiest seasonal experiences in Germany. The only thing to remember is that the bloom period is short and depends on the weather, usually around early to mid-April. If you are flexible with your travel dates, it can be absolutely worth planning around it.

6. Castles West and South of Frankfurt: Cochem, Eltz, Koblenz, Heidelberg and More
This region completely changed the way I looked at Germany. Before visiting, I did not realize how many beautiful castles and small towns are scattered along the Rhine and Moselle Rivers.

Cochem Castle is dramatic and sits beautifully above the town. Eltz Castle feels like something from a medieval storybook, hidden in the forest between the Moselle and Rhine area. Koblenz is a good base or stop, especially because it sits where the Rhine and Moselle Rivers meet. You can also add Thurant Castle and many smaller castles in the region if you want a castle-focused road trip.

To the South of Frankfurt, Heidelberg is one of the most romantic cities in Germany. It has a beautiful old town, a famous castle ruin, a historic university atmosphere, and lovely views over the Neckar River.
If you love castles, wine villages, river views, and romantic landscapes, this is one of the best regions to visit in Germany.

7. Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Rothenburg ob der Tauber is one of the most fairytale-like towns I have visited in Germany. It is located along the Romantic Road and is famous for its medieval walls, half-timbered houses, cute shops, and postcard-perfect streets.

Yes, it can be touristy, but I still think it is worth visiting, especially if it is your first time in Germany. The best way to enjoy Rothenburg is to stay overnight if possible. During the day, it can get crowded with day-trippers, but in the early morning or evening, the town feels much more magical.

8. Munich
Munich is one of the best cities to visit in Germany, especially for first-time travelers. It is elegant, clean, historic, and very easy to combine with day trips to castles, lakes, and the Bavarian Alps. It is also famous for Oktoberfest, the world-famous beer festival that takes place every autumn and brings a lively, festive atmosphere to the city.

I first visited Munich during my solo trip in 2018, then came back again in 2022. Some of the best places to see include Marienplatz, the Residenz, English Garden, Nymphenburg Palace, Viktualienmarkt, and the many beer halls and traditional restaurants. Even outside Oktoberfest season, Munich is a great place to experience Bavarian food, beer culture, and traditional German atmosphere.

Munich is also one of the most convenient bases for visiting Neuschwanstein Castle, Königssee, Salzburg, and other beautiful places in Bavaria.
9. Neuschwanstein Castle
Neuschwanstein Castle is the place that made me fall in love with fairytale Germany. I visited it for the first time in 2018, and then again in 2022 — because yes, it is beautiful enough to visit twice.

The castle sits near Füssen, surrounded by mountains, forests, and lakes. The most famous viewpoint is from Marienbrücke Bridge, where you can see the castle rising dramatically against the Bavarian landscape.

It is touristy, of course, but I still think Neuschwanstein is one of the most iconic places to visit in Germany. If you are planning your first Germany trip, this is probably the castle you should not miss.

10. Königssee and Obersee
Königssee and Obersee are among the most beautiful natural places I have visited in Germany. Königssee is a deep alpine lake with emerald water, surrounded by steep mountains. From there, you can take a boat ride to St. Bartholomä and continue further to reach Obersee.

Obersee was one of the highlights of my Germany summer trip. The lake is peaceful, clear, and incredibly scenic, with mountain reflections and a small wooden hut that makes the view look almost like a painting.

If you love nature, lakes, and alpine landscapes, Königssee and Obersee should be very high on your Germany itinerary.

Germany surprised me slowly. It was not love at first sight in the way Italy or France can be, but after visiting more regions, I realized how diverse and rewarding the country is. You can find modern cities, medieval towns, dramatic castles, cherry blossom streets, wine valleys, alpine lakes, forests, and mountain views — all in one country.
